Vanessa is trained as a community based participatory researcher and utilizes innovative techniques to involve adolescents in her research. Vanessa graduated from Colorado College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs with a Master’s of Arts degree in International Development Practice. She is currently working as a researcher studying Mycobacterium tuberculosis and plans to pursue an MPH in the near future.

Augie grew up on the north side of Chicago in a family that loved people and sports. He later graduated from Luther College where a sociology course ignited his passion for social medicine.  In 2012, he rode a bicycle from San Francisco to Boston with FACE AIDS.  While on the road, he raised funds for Partners In Health, advocated for the right to health, and consumed a substantial amount of ice cream.  He currently studies medicine at the University of Minnesota and is an alumnus of the Minnesota and Uganda SocMed courses.  Thanks to a Fisch Art of Medicine Award, Augie has continued to write on the topics of social medicine, health equity advocacy, and ill-conceived health policies that don’t ensure universal health care.
